Many international students in our focus groups perceived difficulties in accessing desirable internships, feeling that employers prefer to invest in local student interns whose work hours and employment prospects are not restricted by visas. Project data was collected through focus groups with 40 students and a content analysis of 30 international student internship applications. We will present issues participants face in accessing internships, and outline recommendations for transforming practice that have emerged from project findings. This showcase presentation reports on a recent study of international students’ access to and preparedness for internships at an Australian university. Although universities have a responsibility to provide WIL opportunities to international students (Gamble, Patrick & Peach, 2010) international students face challenges in accessing internship placements (Commonwealth of Australia, 2016 Gribble, Blackmore, & Rahimi, 2015 Jackson & Greenwood, 2015). Universities Australia has urged the Australian Government to implement a resourced, coordinated approach towards providing work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities for international students to ensure that Australia remains a competitive study destination (Universities Australia, 2015). The final section provides a discussion of some of the emerging technologies and concepts that could lead to future advancements in the delivery of WIL, both from the perspective of learners and academics. As with any proposed solution, Web 2.0 has its shortcomings, which are also identified in this chapter.

Then a justification for the use of Web 2.0 technologies are put forward as a solution to many of the challenges identified with using e-portfolios for WIL. These issues have been informed by previous case study chapters in this book. The chapter begins by introducing some of the key issues related to the adoption of e-portfolio systems for WIL.

Finally, some of the more novel applications proposed by the literature, such as Web 3.0, which could be employed to ensure the future success of WIL implementation are considered. Issues that arise with the use of Web 2.0 technologies and their solutions will also be discussed. This chapter discusses various opportunities of Web 2.0 technologies and, specifically, how they can facilitate the improved delivery of work-integrated learning (WIL).
